Getting Ready for Your Shoot

GETTING READY

In an ideal world, we would be able to flip a switch and our houses would magically be cleaned, our floors waxed, and our rooms decorated by Joanna Gaines from Fixer Upper. That world doesn’t exist, but you can take some steps to make sure that your home photographs as nicely as it possibly can! While I will often move things around to make a better photograph, rooms must be ready to shoot when I arrive. Assume I shoot everything as is. If you can be outside the house while I am shooting- that is best. This is especially true when it comes to video.

Pets must be locked away. I love animals and animals usually love me but sometimes even the friendliest of pets aren’t pumped to see a stranger in a mask walking around their house. A greater risk, though, is your cat being so friendly that they want to be in all of my shots.

Remove clutter. This means storing everything from TV remotes to trash bins out of sight.

Clean the whole house. We’re talking vacuuming, mopping, windows- everything. You only get one shot at a first impression with potential buyers so turning to the professionals is worth the investment. I recommend Clean Slate Solutions.

Turn all lights on. I might turn them all off- but I prefer to start with them on.

Having matching light-bulbs is great. Daylight balanced bulbs will get you bonus points. Having blown bulbs will be noticeable or will require me to shoot that room without lights.

Turn off all ceiling fans.

Turn off all TVs and computer screens or set a screen saver that does not change.

I like blinds and curtains to be pulled up to 3/4 but whatever you do - make sure all blinds are consistent.

Make all beds.

Place all shoes/jackets in closets.

Put your medicine containers in cabinets or anywhere out of sight. It is also best to remove any family photos that might be on the walls.

Close all of your toilet seats and remove bathroom cleaners, tooth brushes, etc..

Take some time to tidy up your yard. A freshly mowed lawn with open spaces free of toys and lawn tools looks fantastic.
